Retainers are to be worn after the removal of your braces for a period of time to be determined by the doctor (generally 2-3 years). Please remember that this phase of your orthodontic treatment is just as important as the active movement phase of your treatment. Once the teeth have been moved into their desired positions, a period of time is needed to stabilize them so the surrounding bone and soft tissue can conform to its new alignment. This phase of your treatment is a vital step of orthodontics and we ask that you attend all retainer check appointments to ensure your treatment is successful.

How long are retainers worn?
The doctor-supervised retention phase lasts for 24 months. This 24-month phase, along with your initial retainers, is included in your original contract. Following the 24-month period, you will be dismissed from treatment. Should you ever have any questions or the occasion arises after you have been dismissed that your retainers need to be adjusted or replaced, please contact our office. An office visit or lab fee will be charged accordingly. You are encouraged to continue to wear your retainers on a nightly basis after the 24-month supervised time to maintain your “great” smile.

Will my teeth move back after treatment?
As retainers are discontinued, there may be minor changes in tooth position, particularly if excessive forces are applied to the teeth by clenching or grinding. The position and fit of teeth generally change throughout your lifetime with or without orthodontic treatment. Our goal at Dr. Jane’s office is to limit these changes to the natural process of accommodation, while maintaining both good dental function and aesthetic result. Prolonged use of retainers is the best way to retain the good results of your orthodontic investment.

How do I care for my retainers?
Keeping your retainer in the mouth or its case will avoid loss or breakage. If the retainers are lost, broken or do not fit properly, you are urged to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Any additional services that are rendered will be at our usual office replacement or repair fee.

Brushing the retainer with cool water and toothpaste will keep it clean. Periodically soaking it in a denture cleanser or mouthwash will also keep it fresh. Never place your retainer in hot water, as the shape may become distorted and require replacement. If you don’t have access to a toothbrush after eating, rinse off your retainer and place it back in your mouth or in the case provided.

What if my retainer is lost or broken?
Call the office immediately to set up two appointments to replace or repair the retainer. There will be a fee for a lost, broken or repaired appliance. Although there will be a charge for replacement, it is a relatively inexpensive way to protect the investment you have made to your orthodontic treatment.
